AR City

About

AR CITY is an XR simulation experience of urban development, which was exhibited at cross-media event "078KOBE" in 2019. With iPad, people share AR fields and collaboratively build the future of Kobe city with AR.

The experience of AR CITY provides a touchpoint for citizens to join city planning more intuitively and inclusively. After 078KOBE, AR CITY was upgraded as a multiplatform application for Magic Leap 1 and Nreal Light and exhibited at XR Kaigi and docomo Open House.

AR City

Background

AR City is a city-building simulation experience that allows people to collaborate in planning the future city of Kobe. This experience was exhibited at multi-media event 078 KOBE in 2019. Using a small-scale digital model of Kobe city and AR cloud technology, people are able to discuss their individual city plans with a visualized model, collaborate on virtual city planning, and make their ideal cityscape of Kobe.

At the end of AR City, people can see the future cityscape where ar and ar cloud technologies are implemented. Through an experience of building a virtual city with AR technology, citizens are allowed to participate in city planning and learn the process of urban development.

AR City

Execution

AR City was the first output of the cooperative research project with Hakuhodo DY Holdings in exploration of possibilities of AR cloud communication. We asked ourselves one question about our research topic: what kind of communication experience we can create with AR cloud technology?

AR City is not just a use case of communication experience using AR cloud technology but a collaborative tool that encourages people to participate in city planning.

AR City

Results

After the exhibition at 078 KOBE, we improved AR City by adding the multi-platform functionality to AR City and optimizing its user interface and backend system for ar glasses, including NrealLight and Magic Leap 1. The multi-platform version of AR City was exhibited at XR KAIGI 2019 and DOCOMO OPEN HOUSE 2020.
